What once was a modest field laboratory for aquaculture research has evolved into a hub of digital innovation in the Philippine countryside. Mindanao State University at Naawan, long recognized for its fisheries expertise, is now embracing a bold leap into the future through its Digital Transfiguration and Literacy Systems Development Project. This initiative reflects a vision for a 21st-century state university, becoming more data-driven, connected, and resilient, being able to empower students, faculty, and the surrounding community.
Founded as the research and extension arm of the MSU College of Fisheries, MSU-N became a distinct campus in 1973 with the creation of the Institute of Fisheries Research and Development. Despite limited resources and geographic isolation, the university steadily expanded to meet local needs. A turning point came under the leadership of the late Dr. Basari Mapupuno, former MSU System President, and Chancellor Elnor Roa, who championed the push toward digital transformation, securing funding and institutional support for a project that is redefining learning in Naawan.
At the heart of MSU at Naawan’s digital leap is a smart campus infrastructure designed to modernize instruction, optimize operations, and enhance research. The aquaculture research complex has been equipped with IoT-enabled monitoring systems and automation software, promoting sustainable fish and shrimp production while expanding local livelihood opportunities. A campus-wide fiber optic backbone now provides free, high-speed internet to all students, enabling online learning, research, and collaboration. Classrooms feature smart TVs, interactive digital tools, and air-conditioning, while core networks, a centralized data center, and integrated systems like LMS, CMS, FIS, and HRIS streamline academic and administrative processes. Enhanced campus safety and cybersecurity measures ensure a secure, resilient digital environment.
More than a collection of IT upgrades, the project represents a profound redefinition of the learning environment. Leveraging AI tools, high-bandwidth connectivity, and data analytics, MSU at Naawan is personalizing learning, fostering collaboration, and strengthening its role as a research leader in aquaculture and food security. By integrating innovation while remaining true to its roots, MSU at Naawan demonstrates that digital transformation is not limited to urban centers and can most definitely thrive in rural settings. From a field lab to a modern SMART campus, MSU at Naawan exemplifies how public universities can adapt to 21st-century demands while staying faithful to their mission.
